Our Top Album of 2025: The Artist's Lux Takes the Top Spot.

On the surface, this work might appear more like an arduous university examination than a new popular music album from an artist whose previous single was a collaboration with a global K-pop star. Split across four distinct movements and voiced in thirteen tongues, this is a dizzying symphonic opus exploring feminine mystery, religious transcendence, and corporal change, often through the prism of various saintly figures. The end of a romance—a topic handled with grounded honesty on another major 2025 album—is shot upwards on this record, carried by the constant presence of a major symphony orchestra and work from an award-winning composer among a long roll call of collaborators. Its sheer audacity by itself makes the work of other artists appear quite laughable.

Rising Above Scholarly Exercise

The fact that this album manages to escape dry academic posturing feels almost miraculous, and full credit belonging to the artist. While this is not the first time project to alchemize the past and modern styles, the stakes are much higher on Lux, with the tightrope walk far more precarious. What truly elevates this fourth album, outside of its multilayered melodies, rich compositions, and engrained drama, proves to be an essential spirit of joy. Similar to the iconic artist during her peak, you find a captivating sense to Rosalía's voice which sweeps the listener into its whirlwind. When she is tearing your heart in two, you nevertheless desire to stay alongside her through the ride.

A Prime Moment of Exuberance

That exuberant energy shines brightly on a stirring Italian ballad about a saint. It bathes in a string-drenched melancholy for several moments. Then, all the music drops away, and we hear a gleeful laugh and a comment prior to a hilariously exaggerated orchestral crescendo thuds in like cartoonish impact. The track then segues to the frenetic single driven by racing orchestration, an imposing choir, and a cameo role from the artist herself.

"The charm of Lux is that you rarely exactly understand—nor wish to predict—what it will go next."

Nearly each track ends in a totally distinct place from where it began. A track explores the transient nature of celebrity with a featherlight orchestration before disintegrating into electronic chaos. Another, a cut that recalls her earlier rhythmic work begins off dark and sinister, with menacing beats, before sudden traditional handclaps and a heavenly choir arrive to smooth the song's jagged edges.

The Bridge Between Experiment & Accessibility

A key balancing act of the album involves navigating the line of bold innovation and broad appeal. This is little coincidence that the album has achieved the artist's first work to break into the upper reaches of key charts: its heart contains a suite of utterly catchy pop songs. A song sung entirely in English builds around a refrain that feels to collect increasingly nagging melodies while it spins upward. This feat is repeated on another expansive ballad that grows and constricts, intertwining multiple melodies like an intricate weave.

  • A waltz-like song charms with its playful, theatrical drama and an anthemic chorus.
  • Lyrically, it aligns the pop culture honesty of contemporary heartbreak anthems, lambasting an ex- partner described as an "emotional terrorist".
  • Throughout these tracks, the vocals carry a sharp edge, like a fairy-tale character concealing a blade: "Top prize in acting like a scoundrel / You've the podium of disappointment."

An Opulent Banquet for the Ears

Lux is popular music on a grand level, a hungry grasp for high Art in an era of looming artificial sameness. It eschews self-absorption in favor of sublime elevation, crafting an over-the-top spectacle that masterfully manages its own built-in ridiculousness. This is a deep source of buried treasure that takes patience to completely explore but never feels like hard work. Where other major releases of 2025 seemed like feasting on meal, this record is a lavish feast where the guests at it, some tipsy on holy drink, flutter between discussions about historical figures, the galvanizing sensation of soul-shattering grief, and shared stories about hopeless partners. In essence, it's a contemporary theatrical production from pop's most restlessly inventive practitioner.
